If like me you weren’t really paying attention to NYCC there was a lot of Star Wars publishing news to catch up on, so I went hunting for all the news and collected it here for you too!

Let’s begin with High Republic News


There were cover reveals for wave 2 of the Phase II


Cataclysm by Lydia Kang (Adult Novel, April 2023 Del Rey)


Quest for Planet X by Tessa Gratton (Young Reader, April 2023 Disney Lucasfilm)


Path of Vengeance by Cavan Scott (YA, May 2023 Disney Lucasfilm)


There was a new book announced, a YA Anthology announced for July 2023, featuring stories connecting to all three phases, written by all the HR authors - Zoraida Córdova, Tessa Gratton, Claudia Gray, Justina Ireland, Lydia Kang, George Mann, Daniel José Older, Cavan Scott and Charles Soule.

There was another new book announced, The Edge of Balance: Precedent the first manga revealed for Phase II by Daniel José Older & Tomio Ogata (Viz Media May 2023).

Burryaga will return in children’s book ‘Yoda & the younglings’ by Cavan & Rosemary Scott in October 2023 although it probably won’t reveal what we all want to know, DOES HE LIVE?!


On the comics side of things there were artwork reveals from Marvel High Republic & The Blade comics and a cover reveal for Quest of the Jedi, a one-shot comic by Claudia Gray due February 2023 from Dark Horse.


We also got a sneak peak of pages from The High Republic: Chronicles of the Jedi by Cole Horton (Insight Editions Feb 2023), an in universe guide announced at Celebration earlier this year which showed artwork by Ario Anindito.


Lastly we had a  new High Republic edition of The Lightsaber Collection announced for April 2023!



Outside of the High Republic we got plenty more news too…


The biggest announcement was of a new adult novel, Inquisitor: Rise of the Red Blade by Delilah S Dawson due in 2023 from Del Rey. A story about Iskat, a Jedi survivor of Order 66 that turns to the dark side, Iskat has previously been seen in Charles Soule’s Vader run.


A new Marvel mini series, Sana Starros was unveiled, due February 2023. Sana is Han Solo’s former wife and love interest of Dr Aphra that first appeared in the 2015 main Star Wars run.


There were also variant cover reveals for Marvel Star Wars: Revelations a one-shot comic that is said to tease the future of SW comics. The covers feature Dengar & Bossk, Vader & the Eye of Webbish Bog, Dr Aphra and Vader. The comic is due 23rd November 2022.


There were cover reveals for Marvel Doctor Aphra #29, Han Solo & Chewbacca #9 and Bounty Hunters #31 all due February 2023. There were also covers for Dark Horse comics coming in Oct/Nov including Hyperspace Stories, Tales from the Rancor Pit & High Republic Adventures.


We got looks inside Kristen Baker’s Star Wars: 100 Objects (DK April 2023) and Star Wars Timelines (DK Feb 2023) by Kristen Baver, Jason Fry, Cole Horton, Amy Richau, Clayton Sandell.


Lastly there was another new announcement, which I only saw on Friends of the Force Twitter thread and is missing from starwars.com’s recaps - Star Wars Visions: Original Manga from Viz Media will be written by Eiichi Shimizu and illustrated by Tomohiro Shimoguchi.


My Highlights


Of all this news my highlights would include High Republic: Chronicles of the Jedi, I lap up any more information about this era, as well as the gorgeous cover of Path of Vengeance. Whilst a novel about an Inquisitor wouldn’t have been top of my list of wants, I am a fan of her previous Star Wars books Phasma and Black Spire. Finally I’m excited for the Star Wars Visions manga, anything else I can get my hands on connected to the animated anthology series I will snap up!

The Book Of Boba Fett Trailer Review

Hello there! After a month off from the blog, the release of the first The Book Of Boba Fett trailer has brought me back. When this series was announced at the end of The Mandalorian Season 2, I wasn’t particularly hyped for it, and felt it overshadowed the Mandalorian somewhat, and that despite the fact I’ve always been a fan of Boba, I own Fett artwork, figures and clothing! The trailer looks very cool, very Tatooine and  Jabba’s  Boba’s Palace centric, and jam packed with Original Trilogy and Return of the Jedi aliens, from Gamorrean Guards, to Twi’leks, Tuskens, Trandoshans and my favorite species of all - an Ithorian with a speaking role!!! Which makes this nerd wonder if his boy Max Rebo could make an appearance, every crimelord needs entertaining right?! There are some great visuals, the Tusken’s walking through the sandstorm, the huge sunken city both stuck in my mind. Into The Dark Book Review [SPOILERS]

  This was the second High Republic novel for me, and Claudia Gray is my favorite Star Wars author so there was a bit of pressure for me. Into the Dark is a Young Adult novel, but we know from Lost Stars that is no problem. I loved this entry into the High Republic story but I don’t think it quite cracks my Claudia Gray top 3. Claudia Gray’s biggest strength is getting inside characters heads, and each of her previous books has really focused on one or two characters, but Into the Dark is far more of an ensemble, and I did miss that laser focus a little. However I really liked all of the characters in this book and they all get plenty of development, Reath, our main protagonist I really connected with. He is a bookish and studious padawan, who prefers to read about adventure rather than experience it and I found it interesting that he was described as not having as strong a connection to the force but making up for it with hard work and knowledge. Star Wars Celebration 2023: A Starbird Files Blog

Anticipation for me was high, not because I was expecting a lot of announcements (I wasn’t), but because I’ve been to two Celebrations before and had a great time but it was just me & my wife, Debra. This time around I was going to know a bunch of people because of Star Wars Sessions as well as folks from Instagram. On Thursday I went to the ExCel, probably too early to meet Sessions people. But it was fun to hang around and soak up the atmosphere, there were some cosplayers, people going in to collect their badges. Met up with my friend Jimmy from Kansas, then Matt & Luke from SWS, Luke aka One Quarter Portion aka the King of Wales, and others before we headed to Seven Dials Market to meet more people and eat. It was a fun appetizer to the weekend to come.
