Star Wars News Round-Up: June 2021

Book of Boba Fett is Mando Season 2.5

It was reported by Collider on 10th June that The Book of Boba Fett had finished filming and was being referred to as The Mandalorian Season 2.5, which is logical given that we were previously told that the announced series would all take place within the Mandalorian timeline and would interconnect and build to a conclusion. This followed news on 8th June that The Mandalorian had not yet started filming a third season and in all likelihood not begin until late 2021 or early 2022. This was revealed by Pedro Pascal in conversation with Ewan McGregor for Variety. While it’s a shame we will have to wait so long for a third season, I’m still more excited for that than the Book of Boba, it’s make more sense of Rangers of the New Republic not being in active development and Lucasfilm have plenty on their plate right now with Andor and Obi-Wan Kenobi both still in production.

Star Wars Visions first look coming 3rd July

On June 16th it was announced that we will be getting a first look at Star Wars: Visions, the anime anthology series due for release on Disney+ later this year, at the LA Anime Expo Lite on 3rd July. While I’m not generally an anime fan I’m excited to find out what this series will be all about as I’m a big advocate for more animation styles in Star Wars.

Kevin Feige & Patty Jenkin Movies Get Writers

On 25th June The Hollywood Reporter revealed Matthew Robinson as writer for Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron movie. Robinson has written for Invention of Lying, Love & Monsters, Live Die Repeat and Repeat and Little Shop Of Horrors. Rogue Squadron is due for release December 2023, so it is nice to get some news and I look forward to hearing some casting news.

Although you may have missed (like me) that Michael Waldron was announced as the writer for Kevin Feige’s Star Wars movie back in January, the Loki and Rick & Morty writer has recently been talking about the project in GQ magazine:

“It’s very early days on [Star Wars]…. And I think Star Wars, at its best, is a story about family. Han, Luke, and Leia were a family; you love seeing them together, and you hated it when they were split apart. It’s great characters.”

The Acolyte To Begin Filming Feb 2022

On 24th June Discussing Film reported that The Acolyte, helmed by Leslye Headland would begin filming at London’s Pinewood Studios in February 2022. In recent interview with The AV Club, also revealed that she had put together a writer’s room which included one writer who had never seen any Star Wars, while this created some consternation among some fans I see it as a positive thing, and won’t be a problem with Headland being a big fan herself, revealing in the same interview that as a child she loved the films, read the Heir to the Empire books and played Star Wars RPGs. I am particularly fascinated by this series, as it is said to take place at the end of the High Republic era and focuses on a dark side user and feel it promises to be very different.

High Republic Wave 2 Launches

The second wave of the High Republic publishing project launched on 29th June with the publication of The Rising Storm and Race to Crashpoint Tower (in the US). This event was celebrated with a live conversation with the authors which can now be viewed on YouTube, and during this we were told that Wave 3 news would be coming in July. Also on the launch day Tempest Runner, the forthcoming audio drama by Cavan Scott, had it’s cover and description unveiled, the story will follow Nihil leader Lourna Dee who has been captured by the Jedi. We’re still only just scrapping the surface of the High Republic and I can’t wait for all they have to show us, although I may need another bookshelf soon!
