High Republic Adventures #2 Review [SPOILERS!]

 BUCKETS OF BLOOOOOOOOOD!

We pick up right where we left off with the padawans about to face off against the Nihil, but Yoda and Torban Buck arrive to to help the young Jedi to turn the tide, and Yoda gets a line of badass dialogue “If looking for a tiny Jedi, you are...of assistance, might I be” as well as more moments of badassery through the issue.


This chapter of the comic feels like it focuses more on two characters, firstly Krix who seems over his initial shock and anger at Zeen’s secret force abilities and is doubting his people’s anti-force user stance, it feels like he could forgive her but Elder Tromak and Marchion Ro manipulate him using his fear and hurt feelings to keep him onside.


Secondly we get to know Torban Buck a little more, first his terrifying nickname, Buckets of Blood (which he gave himself), but he’s a lover not a fighter, preferring to heal than to use violence. Daniel José Older has explained he was inspired by a paramedic from his former profession with the same self prescribed nickname. We see BUCKETS OF BLOOD (it has to be capitals doesn’t it?) wrecking shop whilst yelling “I Hate Fighting!” - I love him!


Yoda tries to reason with Krix but his fear and sense of betrayal means he gives Yoda away who escapes, Krix is later horrified when Ro destroys a Republic medical ship but is too scared to defy Ro and denounces Zeen, and you can’t help but feel there is a still a chance for Krix to come around.


The story ends with the Star Hopper about to arrive at Starlight Beacon, and any promise of seeing more of the space station excites me. This issue was a big step up from the first for me, a ton of fun and I’m looking forward to see where it goes.

Hello there! After a month off from the blog, the release of the first The Book Of Boba Fett trailer has brought me back. When this series was announced at the end of The Mandalorian Season 2, I wasn’t particularly hyped for it, and felt it overshadowed the Mandalorian somewhat, and that despite the fact I’ve always been a fan of Boba, I own Fett artwork, figures and clothing! The trailer looks very cool, very Tatooine and  Jabba’s  Boba’s Palace centric, and jam packed with Original Trilogy and Return of the Jedi aliens, from Gamorrean Guards, to Twi’leks, Tuskens, Trandoshans and my favorite species of all - an Ithorian with a speaking role!!! Which makes this nerd wonder if his boy Max Rebo could make an appearance, every crimelord needs entertaining right?! There are some great visuals, the Tusken’s walking through the sandstorm, the huge sunken city both stuck in my mind. Into The Dark Book Review [SPOILERS]

  This was the second High Republic novel for me, and Claudia Gray is my favorite Star Wars author so there was a bit of pressure for me. Into the Dark is a Young Adult novel, but we know from Lost Stars that is no problem. I loved this entry into the High Republic story but I don’t think it quite cracks my Claudia Gray top 3. Claudia Gray’s biggest strength is getting inside characters heads, and each of her previous books has really focused on one or two characters, but Into the Dark is far more of an ensemble, and I did miss that laser focus a little. However I really liked all of the characters in this book and they all get plenty of development, Reath, our main protagonist I really connected with. He is a bookish and studious padawan, who prefers to read about adventure rather than experience it and I found it interesting that he was described as not having as strong a connection to the force but making up for it with hard work and knowledge. Star Wars Celebration 2023: A Starbird Files Blog

Anticipation for me was high, not because I was expecting a lot of announcements (I wasn’t), but because I’ve been to two Celebrations before and had a great time but it was just me & my wife, Debra. This time around I was going to know a bunch of people because of Star Wars Sessions as well as folks from Instagram. On Thursday I went to the ExCel, probably too early to meet Sessions people. But it was fun to hang around and soak up the atmosphere, there were some cosplayers, people going in to collect their badges. Met up with my friend Jimmy from Kansas, then Matt & Luke from SWS, Luke aka One Quarter Portion aka the King of Wales, and others before we headed to Seven Dials Market to meet more people and eat. It was a fun appetizer to the weekend to come.
