Marvel The High Republic #6 Review [SPOILERS!]
Writer: Cavan Scott Art: G. Jeanty, K. Story, A. Leoni, J. Caramagna
I’m starting to feel like a broken record but once again I have to gush over Phil Noto’s cover art for the sixth issue in the Marvel High Republic run, Avar Kriss riding a Rancor into battle feels iconic already, and together with the Bad Batch, Rancor fans have been fed well lately!
The story of this issue takes place after a period of time has elapsed and across two fronts. The first aboard Starlight Beacon, where Sskeer is being treated for his Drengir infestation, kept in a stasis field which prevents the parasitic plants from spreading while Keeve refuses to leave his side. The second location see’s Avar still working with the Hutts fighting the Drengir on the planet of Daivak, the monsters have spread and infested hundreds of worlds during the time jump. When Avar commands all Jedi on Starlight to come to their aid, Keeve decides to take decisive action and turns off the stasis field, the Drengir in Sskeer attacks her and then she and her former master take an internal journey into the hive mind of the Drengir, this leads to some excellent art work depicting the root mind, the other Jedi aid their quest through the force and Keeve makes a break through in finding how to defeat the Drengir.
I really enjoyed Stellan Gios popping up in this issue along with OrbaLin, who although we met him back in issue 4, I feel like I know a whole lot better as I am currently reading The Rising Storm, it’s this connectivity that is one of the joys of the High Republic project. We see that some Jedi have doubts about Avar Kriss’ pact with the Hutts, which is the first time we’ve really seen the Jedi’s poster child in a less than perfect light, could her decision to work with them backfire on her? Sskeer seems to finally break free from the influence of the Drengir, finally, but can we trust Cavan Scott not to take this hope away? This issue slowed things down a little and sets us up for a big 7th installment.
